How To Speed Up Your PC

Figuring out how to speed up your PC can be tricky. For instance you could remove some programs and files -- but what if you use all that stuff? Or you could add memory or disk space -- but that means spending quite a bit of money. So what do you do? Live with your PC as it is? Fortunately there are plenty of other things you can do to speed it up -- let's take a look at a few.

Tip 1: Speed up your PC by disabling your indexing services.

This is a little program that uses a lot of memory, often not only decreasing PC speed but making it noisy. What it does, is to process indexes and up-date lists of all the files on your PC. This is so that when you search for something on your PC, it will search faster by scanning these index lists. But if you don't search your PC often -- or even if you do -- this service is really quite unnecessary. Here's how to disable it:

Click 'Start', then 'Control Panel'.

Double-click 'Add/Remove Programs'.

Click 'Add/Remove Windows Components' and then uncheck 'Indexing Service'.

Click 'Next'.

Tip 2: Speed up your PC by optimising your display settings.

This is particularly for Windows XP, which can look really cool -- but displaying all the visual items can really waste system resources. Here's how to speed up you PC this way:

Click 'Start', then 'Control Panel', and then 'System'.

Click the 'Advanced' tab -- in the 'Performance' tab click 'Settings'.

Leave only the following items ticked:
Show shadows under menus
Show shadows under mouse pointer
Show translucent selection rectangle
Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
Use visual styles on windows and buttons
Tip 3: Speed up your PC by checking your registry files.
These tell your PC how to use the software installed on it -- over time they change quite a bit and there's a communication breakdown. So your PC loses speed. While Windows can't do this for you on its own, there is registry repair software available that will find those breakdowns for you, report back to you and ask if you'd like to set things straight. This process is very easy to manage and in my experience has accounted for the most dramatic speed up in PC performance.

There are plenty of decent registry repair products out there with which to speed up your PC. Here's one I'd recommend giving a go. It's completely compatible with all versions of Windows, from the older ones to XP and Vista. It's also thorough, easy to use and you can test it out for free.
